There is a movie called The Ugly Stepsister that is coming out next month. It is a Cinderella retelling but from ther point of view of one of the stepsisters.

A subversion already but..

Can only think of one theatre near me that might be showing it-the closest thing to an art house theater since our dedicated one(Hillcrest Cinemas and the only one I believe?) has closed .

The trailer for 28 Years Later dropped and..quite frankly I am ready for it to be next summer already because it is going to be amazing. The trailer had people talking..and that’s a good thing. But some of it is speculation..well, imma put this behind a cut.

Eventually there will be a synopsis posted somewhere are I’ll be able to see how right(or not) I was.Reminds me of The First Omen….there were a LOT of red herrings in the trailer. That didn’t do anything as far as enjoying the movie goes.

Saw Alien Romulus yesterday and I LOVED it. No spoilers but…was it scary?Oh yeah! Was it gory?also yes.(me, at the end of the movie:”If I have nightmares tonight I only have myself to blame”.(but I didn’t.I have a high tolerance for scary..my level for being scared is The Exorcist, by the way.)

This is coming from someone without much of a knowledge of the Alien movies(beyond watching clips on YouTube).I did see Prometheus and liked it.And *that* was considered pretty intense but I liked that and wasn’t too scared by that, either.)

As I said in a previous blog I finally got around to watching The Zone Of Interest..Would not say that I am glad that I watched it(not the sort of thing you can watch more than once.) Imma put most of this behind a cut.

I can see why it won an Oscar for best sound for sure.

OH. MY!!! Wow! I have so much to say about the movie but most of it is going to go underneath a cut for anyone who wants to go into it unspoiled. I am just going to say,pre-cut,that the word I would use is “misdirection”.. If you see it you’ll know what I am talking about .

This review is all over the place..I wanted to do a mostly spoiler free review but went into writing this without any notes, which is very unusual for me.

One more thing: having been to Italy, and specifically Rome, twice, I LOVED the scenery porn where they would have scenes with wide shots of Rome.

After reading many comments online, I am thinking I may be wrong about the plot of The First Omen. This is going to go under a cut.

I’m seeing it the day it comes out and will post a sort of scorecard/follow up post to let y’all know how right(or wrong) I was.

The Omen has a prequel coming out next month. At first people were like “this is going to answer a lot of questions that we have always had about certain aspects of the original film. “Then we get the first trailer and we get the information that a key aspect of the original film has been changed and people felt some sort of way about it.In the context of 1976 it probably made sense..but here is the thing:It has now become canon. So to walk it back after all of these years doesn’t make any sort of sense.

We’re finally going to get Damien’s backstory and those of some key characters(and it will explain why they had the motivations that they had.) The characters I am talking about(if I am correct) are going to be more fleshed out than they were in the original film.. In the original 1976 Omen film they were-well, at least one person was-proper scary.the other was one of the people who was there when Damien was born.If anyone would know what sort of power that kid has they would. Clearly Father Spileto does(and will we find out how he become disabled-well, we know that he was burned in a fire but clearly he has a MUCH bigger part in this-as does Margaret, And it becomes a conspiracy on a HUGE level. What is the deal with Father Brennan and his bedsit with bible pages and crosses.

Damien is powerful, and Brennan knows this and wants to atone for his parr in it. It doesn’t end well for Brennan- put it that way.

The car crash in the trailer is someone trying to keep all of the secrets of the cult(hiding in plain sight)
I was a little confused about who the woman in the trailer was. There is the nun, who if I am right will be revealed to be

The  trailer for the Omen prequel dropped and I am here for it.

There will be spoilers for the original Omen movie so if you haven’t seen it ..well  you’re about to get spoiled.

1)The trailer is backwards.Which gives away..not that much actually.

2)Father Brennan is in this(he was the one who tried to warn  Damien’s adopted parents that their son  was the Antichrist.)

3)Flashbacks to the main female  character’s life before she  gets to the convent on Italy.

4)a  666 mark in the roof of someone’s(the woman’s?) mouth,.\

5)A baby(the Thorne’s stillborn child?) being taken somewhere.

6)Evil priests(getting Rosemary’s Baby vibes.)

7)There is some conjecture about who the woman  is.I heard conjecture that maybe she becomes Mrs. Baylock ,the evil  nanny from the original.  Movie

8)IMO there is a. retro look to the movie(the OG Omen was released  in 1976 so in that way they are staying in canon.)

The Last Train, from 1999 is a miniseries that I had not heard of.

What is the premise? An asteroid is about to hit the earth, but there is a twist:The passengers who are on a train at the time the asteroid is going to hit the earth get cryogenically frozen and are unfrozen in the year 2050, in which time the world has changed, thanks to the asteroid strike which was apocalyptic.

One of the survivors knew that the asteroid was going to hit.Was a scientist and was part of a program for sheltering survivors and rebuilding society such as it was. However ,since the asteroid did its damage and there are survivors, some who are managing better than others ,getting to safety isn’t going to be as simple as they think it is.

One of the survivors is pregnant because 16 years after the strike most women became sterile so her being pregnant is unique. Shades of the P.D. James book Children Of Men which also takes place after some sort of cataclysm and a world in which women are mostly sterile but there is one woman who is pregnant.

Found a disaster movie I had never heard of-A Fire In The Sky.

The plot is that a comet is supposed to hit a large city and at first people blow the person who is covered it off and then realise that actually, yeah, there IS an incoming disaster. There is the calm before the storm and people trying to get to safety-and some just saying “fuck it” and staying and dealing with it.Exactly.Grab your ankles and kiss your ass goodbye for lack of a better way to put it.,

Of course, NOTHING is accurate. A comet the size of the one shown would do a whole lot more damage than just taking out a city. The award for getting it the most accurately is a Discovery show about an asteroid impact. That was VERY accurate and the sort of thing that freaks Coast To Coast listeners out ‘cause it is so plausible. The conspiracy theories are what get me-Coast To Coast types think that if an asteroid was about hit Earth that they would not tell us until the last second. I can’t say I blame the government for covering it up-they know that the Coast To Coasters would freak out.

That is why George Noory spending so much time on topics like this annoys the shit out of me.And there are people that buy into it-totally and completely.

I was going to save this for Monday when I did a weekend report post but I am going to talk about it today.

So!I saw Oppenheimer yesterday! LOVED it and it is a must see for sure. I have to say the acting all around was great-and the cinematography was amazing-it was actually filmed in New Mexico which is somewhere I would move if I had to leave California(not that I’m going to but I would love to visit New Mexico again.) Just give Cillian Murphy the damn Best Actor award already,Christopher Nolan best director and the movie best picture.Yep, I feel some kind of way about it.

Didn’t hurt that I was at the “posh” movie theater ($20 a ticket and just about that much for popcorn and a drink but you can get refills on both the popcorn *and* the drinks. But honestly? You don’t need them! They have a full var and you can get drinks(wine and beer and mixed drinks!) Best part about it is this is a theater that has the recliner seats which, given it is a LONG movie, is a definite bonus for sure.

What I can’t get over is..putting this behind a cut.

Going to see Barbie buit it’s gonna be a while. I high key want to see Oppenheimer again but will wait until it is On Demand where I can pause it for bathroom breaks.

They have a biopic about Priscilla Presley that is not their usual thing(they do a LOT of horror movies but

Lady Bird

Minari(which I still need to watch)

Moonlight

Room

Ex Machina

The Florida Project

are all their movies but they’re best knows for are Hereditary and Midsommar.

Speaking of movies, I habe been wanting to mention that I am excited about a movie called Poor Things.Directed by the same guy who did The Favourite(one of ny well, favourite movies). It’s got a sort of steampunk aesthetic to it and I am here for it.)

*It being 1964 things are much cheaper-$3.98 for a album!

*Pay phones-and in a record store, too!

*Pam is getting married-to her jerk boyfriend(more about him in a minute)and they were going to have a shower for her but decide to go to New York instead (they live in New Jersey)so Grace(their other friend)can get pictures of the band.

Rosie tells them that Larry Dubois’ dad has lots of limos..he’s an undertaker. They are able to talk him into driving them to the city(even though he only has his learner’s permit!)

*Janice, the record store owner’s daughter is an antagonist (at least at the start..)

*They head out toy New York(via Philadelphia..)on the way they meet up with Tony Smerko who is the archetype of the greaser who would HATE The Beatles back in the day.True enough. He does not like the Beatles(but by the end of the movie is a fan.)

*Larry Dubois has a crush on Jackie Kennedy (mind you this was not horribly long after the assasination of JFK ..it was pretty fresh in peoples’ memories.

*Rosie does a roll out of the car to get to a pay phone in order to get tickets for the Ed Sullivan show.

*Finally they get to the hotel and Smerko manages to create a diversion so that the girls can sneak into the hotel. Rosie instantly gets caught though .

*Fans think a mop is a..mop top and that gets them screaming, lol.

*Pam loses her engagement r8ing and has to hide in a storage closet. She sees the Beatles walking by on the way to their limo and..she’s more of a fan than we thought!

*Grace gets caught. Rosie meets a kid named Richard Klaus who goes by the name Ringo, just like Ringo Starr. He’s just as much of a fan as Rosie is. Ringo took over a room in the Plaza hotel and has it covered with Beatles swag.Knows everything about the Beatles..but so does Rosie.

They get thrown out of the hotel .

Rosie calls Richard her “boyfriend”. Oops.

*Funny moment with Beatles fan outside being interviewed-“I love John..he could get a divorce, or his wife could die in a plane crash”. LOL.

*In having to hide, Pam gets under a room service trolley and winds up in the Beatles’ hotel room and..yeah. She is more of a fan than she thought. She touches Paul’s bass and gets some souvenirs (including hair and cigarette butts!) She almost gets caught, and then gets caught later on(and gets tickets to Ed Sullivan)

*Janice meets a male Beatles fan who has tickets to the Ed Sullivan show. His dad wants him to have a haircut to get the tickets back.

*Grace has a chance to take pictures of the Ed Sullivan stage.. for $50 which seems incredibly steep for 1964.

*Two girls think Tony looks like Paul McCartney. That goes over about as well as you would think.

*Larry and Grace try to sell fake Beatles bedsheets but almost get beat up by a bunch of female toughs.

*Janice and Peter try to break into the Ed Sullivan theater, almost get arrested but are saved by fellow Beatles fans.

*Larry and Grace are at a bar-Larry is DRUNK.Grace overhears a guy calling for an escort. She formulates a plane to which Larry says it is a sin. Grace gets her money.

*Janice and Peter talk Tony into getting the tickets back which they do. Peter’s dad want him to have a buzz cut.

*Rosie goes back to the Plaza(she has a key in her pocket still), wins tickets to the Ed Sullivan show but gets stuck in the elevator with Ringo/Richard who snuck back into the hotel. They are able to get out of the elevator though.

*Pam does a press conference “the girl who got into the Beatles’ hotel” and she seems overwhelmed. Her boyfriend Eddie is not happy about it though.Later, Pam does a feminism as they are passing the Ed Sullivan theater and decides she would rather see the Beatles than get married to Eddie.

*Tony tries to interrupt the Ed Sullivan show but almost gets electrocuted; The Beatles are on Ed Sullivan and Rosie faints!

*Meanwhile, Grace has to pay a parking ticket for Larry so no $50 to take pictures of the Beatles. After the show The Beatles all pile into the limo that Grace and Larry are in and they take off, with Grace taking lots of pictures . The rest of the kids see the New Jersey plates and Tony says “nah…couldn’t be!”

(I would’ve loved to see what happened next, especially with Larry and Grace getting to drive the Beatles around .

Also, did Rosie and Ringo stay friends/become boyfriend/girlfriend ?

Most importantly:I hope to god that Pam didn’t go back to Eddie afterwards.I rather doubt it.)

First of all: The unpopular opinions:

I thought Hugh Grant was well within his right to be snarky with the gal who was interviewing him.The interviewers are always so vapid, some of them moreso than others

Second:The “faux outrage” over Angela Bassett losing had me SMH.Would have been great if she had won but the salty look on her face when Jamie Lee Curtis won was NAGL.

That being said: I didn’t watch the whole thing.I kept checking in, both online and otherwise.

It’s obvious they want us to forget about what happened with W*** S**** but that is emblazoned on the collective Jimmy Kimmel was asking Malala about Chris Pine and Harry Styles and she was like “I’m about peace”. Good response from ya girl!

It was a night of firsts-the first Asian woman to win an Academy Award(Merle Oberon was part Asian but had to hide who she was because of the standards of Hollywood at the time she was nominated for an Oscar.)
Ke Huy Quan also got a Academy Award-for Best Supporting Actor. There was a definite sweep by Everything, Everywhere All At Once.

They may say “oh.Oscars So White”..and yeah, as I said I would have loved to see Angela Bassett win-but there was some serious representation of the Asian community on Sunday night. They were SEEN.

Recorded Macbeth off of HBO.I hadn’t seen it before, and apparently it’s not available on Amazon Prime(and when it was you had to pay for it I believe.) So seeing that it was on HBO I took advantage of that fact. And I was not disappointed. Mind you, this is the only(movie) version of Macbeth that I’ve seen.I’ve also seen the Romeo And Juliet from 1996.

However, I’ve seen Macbeth at the Old Globe in San Diego Once it was in the actual setting(old Scotland) and the other it was set in World War I which didn’t work for the first half of the play but got much better in. the second half. The Old Globe always does interesting productions of Shakespeare’s plays(one of the best ones was The Taming Of The Shrew, set in the Wild West and Twelfth Night set in the future(I’ve seen Twelfth Night twice actually..when I think about it there are quite a few plays I have seem more than once.)

Michael Fassbender OWNS the role of Macbeth. Kind of a shame that it was a flop and didn’t make a lot of money but it is well worth the 2 plus hours that you’ll spend watching. Faithful to the source material too.

(Fun fact:My dog Macduff was named after..yes..the character Macduff in the play.So whenever I’ve seen that play or a reference to it, I picture my dog, who was a Basset Hound.)

As an example:Omen II. Several people KNOW that Damien is EVIL but they get killed off before they can prove it. Especially the “aunt” who knows there is something up with Damien(and she keeps mentioning the fact that Damien’s father tried to kill him. Ouch. And threatens to write him out of her will (and then drops dead a couple of scenes later. Coincidence? Nope.

Then, someone is about to figure out that Damien is..not exactly who everyone thinks he is, that person gets killed off(in a very gruesome way it must be said.) Everyone else is like “eh, they’re just freak coincidences”.

Kinda reminds me of The Seventh Sign, where the end of the world is happening but only a few of the characters seem to notice what is going on. That’s why when it actually happens for real it is going to be VERY obvious. Not what people THINK they are.

Caught the end of Greenland the other day. I think it is one of the more accurate(that’s debatable but whatever at least it’s not 2012 even though I love 2012 that is an incredibly flawed movie.)

The end of it was kinda hopeful-there were more people than just them that were able to get to ground before things happened and one of the last scenes is one of the people in the bunker walking out to a changed earth-literally scorched-but there are birds. That is significant!

Were I not fortunate enough to be able to get into a bunker I would be OK with it. Going through all of the stages of grief and all that(That’s dependent on how much heads up we had before it happened, of course.)

Was going to do a meme today..one of the questions was “what is your favourite musical?” I love ALL the musicals-I haven’t seen any that I didn’t like, put it that way!

As a kid,I grew up listening to(and watching )musicals . My most listened to musical soundtracks when I was a kid were Grease and Annie.I think I wore those records out listening to them so much.I also have a soft spot for The Sound Of Music(I know the words to most of the songs, that’s how many times I’ve seen it-The Sound of Music is always on during the holidays(usually Christmas)

(In case you’re wondering, yes,I want to see the new West Side Story. But I can’t guarantee that I won’t be dancing and singing along!)

Watched the new Home Alone movie on Disney Plus. I really enjoyed it and this is coming from someone who is a devotee of the original film, there were lots of nods to the OG-like having the guy who played Kevin McAllister’s brother reprising his role!

The kid who played Max was adorable-he played JoJo’s friend Yorkie in JoJo Rabbit.

Just heard some interesting news about the new James Bond movie. Eventually I am going to put some things behind a cut but let me tell you:I am glad to see the end of Daniel Craig. He has become a whiny bitch about playing James Bond, especially in the last couple of years(mind you he’s been playing Bond for many years now but the amount of complaining that he has done..I have to wonder what is being said behind the scenes every time that he complains but maybe they can just brush it off because for the most part Daniel toes the company line .

And speaking of a company line.. it seems like there are a LOT of people who have seen the movie early-ish(there were a lot of people from MI6 which is a Bond website) hanging out at the premiere (they like to feel like they are close to greatness I guess..and it’s interesting because there have been spoilers posted at MI6 and..there has been some less than positive feedback .Mind you, this is a website that went ga-ga over Daniel Craig when Casino Royale was released. That’s changed somewhat over the course of his tenure of Bond because some of his Bond films were better than others, if we’re being honest(and I am).

OK, headed into spoiler territory so you have been warned .
