roaming_kate23As I said in a previous blog I finally got around to watching The Zone Of Interest..Would not say that I am glad that I watched it(not the sort of thing you can watch more than once.) Imma put most of this behind a cut.
Zone is based on a book(although in the book they have another name in the movie they are named-Rudolf. Hess and his family -his wife and 5 kids.Of all of the kids-only one-who was a baby at the time this takes place-is still alive.)
They are living next door ro Auschwitz-where Hoss is commandant. A LOT of research went into building the villa as it would have looked back in the day.Can even see Auschwitz-they did their research of that, too. It would have been visible from most of the bedrooms in the house,to say nothing of the ambient sounds. You hear what would be typical but also..gunshots and people screaming.Which Hoss’ children can hear clear as day. Whether they know what is going on is not clear .There is another scene where the kids are playing inb the river, and Rudolf finds the body part from a prisoner and he makes the kids get out of the river.
Later on, Hedwig’s mother is visiting and she notices an eerie glow in the sky -and she knows perfectly well what it is-the crematoriums.Also, just being near Auschwitz in general. It upsets her enough that she up and leaves in the middle of the night Hedwg is,,in denial about what is going on ..that would be putting it mildly..
She threatens the staff with being sent to the camps when they do something wrong. Who knows if those is played up for the movie but she later remarried and started a new life elsewhere. Hedwig gives the clothes from the prisoners and tells the house staff they can pick out whatever they want.And the kids got teeth from prisoners-when I realised what it was.. * shidder*
Towards the end of the film there is a scene where Höss is walking down a flight of stairs..In the distance of each floor there is a hallway.And the dark gets darker with every successive floor-like he is descending into hell, perhaps,or *points at subject line*
I can see why it won an Oscar for best sound for sure.
