Mar. 14th, 2025 07:18 amGuess who took her first solo Uber ride yesterday ?That would be ya girl! And it went about as well as I could have expected it to.
(A little back story:Up until recently I had a cab driver friend who I could call and I would get a ride to the grocery store and the like. However,as I recently mentioned he went radio silent.I have been flummoxed about how to deal with it.I mean, obviously Uber and Lyft are out there and I resisted them as long as I could-for what reason I’m not entirely sure. But it came to this and you know what?I am glad that it happened.
Here is the thing about my cab driver friend:I would be beholden to regular jobs that he would have and he would have jobs where he would have to drive a passenger to the airport(and it was money that he needed.)The timing of the rides were not predictable though. I know people Not so much Uber and Lyft. The two times(so far-to my appointment and back home-and by the way yesterday we had every season in one day here in San Diego..including hail which does NOT happen very often.)I have NOT had to wait very long and given how inclement the weather was yesterday that was a good thing!
Another thing is price. You can choose the car and driver that you want and it can go from a regular car to a ride in a Tesla(not going to do that..I wonder how many takers they get for those.)I don’t really care what car I’m in(as long as it’s not a Tesla, obviously.)

[Safe space?well yeah]
Jan. 17th, 2025 11:32 amI have said before that I love BlueSky because it is the ANTI Twitter. I can say whatever the fuck I want and nobody calls me out on it.In fact they are AGREEING with me if anything else.
Back in the days when I was on Vox..which is a long-gone blogging platform-it was OK at first but then it got ugly. And inasmuch as you should have been able to control who commented on your blog entries, it didn’t always work. By the time that Vox finally shut down,I’d moved on and (quite rightfully I might add)felt more than a little smug about the whole deal.

Jan. 8th, 2025 08:43 amI have been at BlueSky for almost 3 months and I love it. It is the anti-T*****r. People who try to start trouble get smacked down REAL quickly which, thank god. It’s not owned by an asshole.
Sure,I lost a few followers when I went over to BlueSky but also I have made a lot of new friends. We have things we like in common(Hannibal and music among other things.)Oh, and hating the Orange Asshole.

[Not so stellar overdrive *]
Jul. 3rd, 2024 07:13 pmSo I have had the Overdrive app on my iPad for a while. I like it but.. being that is it linked to the local library to where you live there can be a wait for books and you have to put a hold on books.
fast forwards to yesterday: someone in the book club that I go to mentioned an app called Hoopla.I downloaded it and signed up and..it is amazing! To the extent that I deleted the Overdrive/Libby app and am never going back to Overdrive/Libby.
Yes, Hoopla is also through the Library but there is never a wait for books. And there is twice the selection of Overdrive/Libby.
*if you get the reference, high five!

[Easier in a lot of ways]
Oct. 4th, 2023 09:32 amMy charger that charges all of my electronics(headphones ,cell phone and iPad) quit working. I was dead in the water for a minute and had to loan one off my neighbours.
Here is the thing:I have had this charger for only a few years(got it at the start of the p*n*e*i* toi give you some idea. Fast?yeah, OK. I’ve seen quicker(like the replacement but I’ll get to that in a minute.) and one of the downsides of that charger was that the part that went from the charger to the power source(in this case a power strip). It was always too loose and yeah..that was definitely a problem for me.
As I said, the old charger quit working and my dad was able to get it working..for a second and then nothing. So now I have a new charger and can charge everything I need to and the upside is that it is a lot smaller than the one that I had which makes me happy.I appreciate having the extra space on my desk for sure! And yes,it is VERY fast!

[Definitely Direct.]
Feb. 25th, 2023 04:15 pmMy dad has been going back and forth on whether he is going to switch to Spectrum..ultimately he decided to stay with DirectTV. But at one point several options were being considered, including just going to strictly streaming(think YouTube TV..which I have sone experience with..it is just that I do not want to be the one holding my parents’ hands when they need tech support.
I understand technical stuff..to a point. But don’t ask me to do anything too tricky.I have tried to stress this to my parents and honestly, they’re trying, god bless them!

[Staying with DirectTV for now]
Jan. 3rd, 2023 08:07 amMy dad has been thinking about switching to Spectrum cable/internet.For him, better(his cable has been slow for a while.)
Each cable/satellite providers has their pluses and minuses.
Take DirectTV for instance:Hionestly,I can’t complain, and I have not had the issues with it that I did with YouVerse. One downside of it is that it is not good for places where there is any kind of weather(not an issue here the vast majority of the time.)
Spectrum is not available in my city so for now I have DirectTV.
I wouldn’t mind just going tp streaming(YouTube TV and the like) but there is some finessing involved with getting that set up and my tech knowledge only goes so far!

[Actively looking at new cable providers]
Dec. 20th, 2020 08:31 amBut for now, DirectTV is just fine.It has its issues for sure(not for areas where you get any sort of bad weather because it can and does go out when the weather is bad.Luckily in the 2 plus years that we have had Direct we haven’t had a lot of issues but occasionally we do.
It’s a whole lot better than uVerse which was horrible(I feel bad for anyone who still has them as an internet provider because they’re terrible.OTOH when we complained about certain things, we got free premium channels and I did like that.)
Direct has some pluses for sure- their DVR’s have a lot of storage room-you can record a lot of shows/movies and still have a lot of space(sometimes I will tape a bunch of shows and it takes me a while to get to them.Eventually if they are on there I delete them.I make that executive decision and(mostly) don’t feel badly about it.
That being said,I have been doing some research and to be honest, Direct is seeming very good to me.All of the cable companies that are available in my area have their pluses and minuses. Direct’s are their On Demand(which is very extensive they even have a lot of free TV shows) and, as I mentioned before, the DVR.
Minuses:The also previously mentioned weather issues. And the occasional issues too but some of those can be fixed by googling(had to do that the other day actually)
Friends of my dad’s just got Spectrum(they’re new to the area) but it’s not available where I live(yet). Yeah..Spectrum is not perfect either. Lots of issues with customer service. That, to me is a red flag.I remember a few times that it took uVerse a few days to get out there when something went wrong. And one of the modems that we had was(partly) battery operated and of course the battery died right after something very important-one of the Hannibal season finales-so I had to use the internet at Starbucks.

[Honestly,I have no complaints]
Sep. 15th, 2020 07:39 pmBoth my parents and I have both have had DirectTV for just over 2 years and I wouldn’t switch to another satellite company or cable company.
Before we had DirectTV we had Uverse(AT&T) which was great..for a time. The last year and a half was the worst. Our cable would go out and there would be a several day wait until they could send someone out to fix it -not the case with DirectTV because they pretty much do everything remotely and it works again.
And speaking of not working..one of the downsides of DirectTV is that it won’t work when the weather is really bad but that’s happened exactly *once*! Yeah! The weather that particular day was pretty gnarly(it was on Thanksgiving -very fall-like weather!)

[A year in, and I’m happy]
Aug. 12th, 2019 09:39 amAs of the end of this month(the 29th which is another significant anniversary but stay tuned for more on that!) both my parents and I will have had DirectTV for an entire year.
Yes, we have what is basically their version of basic cable and we still get a lot of channels..Do I miss some of the channels that I don’t get anymore?Of course!(when we had uVerse we had a couple of free premium channels because my dad complained about how much we were getting charged.Haven’t had that problem with Direct(yet..).I don’t miss how uVerse crashed all the time.Like completely and it would take a couple of days to get someone to fix it.
