[a different sort of San Diego post]
Apr. 11th, 2023 06:39 amMy favourite neighbourhoods and why I love them:
Pt. Loma is so pretty, and also very diverse in terms of who lives there and also the houses(they are on the flight path for San Diego’s airport and the city paid for everyone who lives there to have better windows in their houses
Hillcrest:San Diego’s gay neighbourhood and one that has changed over the years.Lots of places to eat and shop.
Coronado:One of the best things about Coronado is that, even though it’s contained in a fairly small area there is everything you would need within a short drive. The Silver Strand on one end and North Island Naval base on the other.
Oceanside:Beaches beaches and more beaches.I may be a little biased because I live here!
Balboa Park:I’ve probably been to Balboa Park more than anyplace else in San Diego. Love walking across the Cabrillo bridge to go to the Old Globe. In the summertime it’s perfect. If you go on one side there is a dog park and it’s fun to stand there and watch the dogs for a minute. Also, there is an amazing view of downtown San Diego.

Apr. 1st, 2023 07:47 amSan Diego Zoo circa 1968
Sea World pearl divers(I remember this from school field trips.)
The Strand/Ken theatres
OG Del Taco
Kit Carson Park
Horton Plaza was confusing(YES!!) and a picture with the Broadway department store.
Fashion Valley circa 1974(I remember the OG Fashion Valley Mall before they up and redid it. There was a Woolworth’s there up until 1995(and yes,I remember shopping there) also the way it used to look(it was also one of several places in San Diego that had a Farrells.I could do a whole post on Farrells .That place was great!(IIRC there was also a Farrells at UTC for a while and what I recall was when you walked in there was a old school candy store. Gotta love a place that sells specialty candy(Horton Plaza had a candy store that had bulk candy in barrels, including a zillion flavours of salt water taffy!

The Vintage San Diego community on Facebook has been reminding me of all sorts of things that I’d completely forgotten about, like the Galaxy Diner at Horton Plaza(which later became a McDonald’s of all things!)
Pretty much right next door to that was an FAO Schwarz..not as spandango as the one in New York City..one thing that I remember is that they had a huge selection of collectible Barbies(which were very expensive.) Speaking of expensive:I can pinpoint the point at which Horton Plaza went into decline:When they built all that(IMO) not needed Sam Goody. Which by the way tried to be many things(they even had a cafe there at one point.) My problem with that place was it was WAY more expensive than any of the other places that I would buy music(when I worked at The Wherehouse they wanted us to only shop there, even though we hardly got a discount .I would have gone to Lou’s(these were the days before iTunes) and I told one of the people I worked with so and they were very dismissive.Well, of course.
There was a picture back when The Broadway(!) was there..I think most of the Broadways became Macy’s and now Macy’s is hurting(especially if they are in a dead mall like the one near my house.)
*Anthony’s Harbourside(across the street from the OG(to me anyways) Anthony’s. Only went to Harbourside a couple of times..it was always Anthony’s or the Fishette which was a take out place right next door to Anthony’s(OG).
*The Balboa Park train-which was thrilling as a kid and was thrilling the last time I went on it-which was quite a few years ago.See also:the Coronado bridge.

[San Diego things]
Jan. 8th, 2023 07:36 amSan Diego chicken(I remember him well!)
Hotel Del under construction(fun fact:The Hotel Del was the first hotel in the U.S. to be wired for electricity,It’s undergone a few redos since.)
Ken theater)a very old school theater..there used to be a similar theater-and I can’t remember the name-in downtown La Jolla.
Flooding in Mission Valley(the reason that land-and Fashion Valley-were so cheap? It’s a flood plain and gets flooded when there is a significant amount of rain.)

[Brian’s was the biggest surprise]
Dec. 20th, 2022 12:05 pmOn the San DiegoVille website there was a list of restaurants that have gone out of buisness this year. I would hate to be a restaraunt owner in this day and age-something that I have noticed is that a lot of restaurants in my neighbourhood only open for a few hours or only a couple of days(like Ryes And Grind, the Jewish deli near my house which is open Wednesday-Sunday. Depending on what you buy there,I think R&G is great value for what you get.. I mean, half a sandwich and one of their sides fills me up just fine.)
*points to subject line* Mind you I only went to Brian’s a handful of times, after I had been to the Borders bookstore (also RIP..that was the best Borders, too. It was 2 stories and had a really good selection of stuff. Brian’s was a old school place, with lots of wood and brass and a long bar.

[Hometown boy makes good!]
Nov. 7th, 2022 08:04 amThe Almost Famous musical is now on Broadway. It debuted at the Old Globe and was a big deal especially since it was based on the movie.
Said movie was written by Cameron Crowe who grew up in San Diego(and there are several San Diego-centric moments, including his mom(played by Frances McDormand) talking about going to the Old Globe-the first time I saw the movie I was like “OMG!” and also a shot of the Campanile(bell tower) in Balboa Park.)
BUT..it’s the scene at the San Diego Sports Arena that is the most San Diego thing about it.(and it has not been the San Diego Sports Arena for a while but a lot of people still call it that-like the San Diego County Fair-I -and a lot of other people-call it the Del Mar Fair because that’s what it was when they were kids.)

Oct. 17th, 2022 07:53 amThe Padres have been on a winning streak and long may it last. They have been in the World Series a couple of times only to get knocked out(I remember when I was a teenager and they got in only to be knocked out..I was inconsolable for quite a while.)
San Diego has a complicated relationship with sports teams. The Chargers went to Los Angeles and yet they still have a lot of fans here. Also, we’ve hosted the Super Bowl a couple of times and one time there was someone who was commentating who did nothing but shit talk San Diego the whole time.
Jack Murphy, where the Chargers used to play was knocked down and they built Snapdragon(yeah I don’t know about the name either.).When they played the first game there recently it was during the epic heatwave.Unfortunately there is NO shade to sit in.Like, NONE.Mind you, heat waves don’t happen that much in San Diego. But glad that they realised that and are going to fix it.

[The heat wave is OVER.Thank goodness!]
Sep. 12th, 2022 08:14 am*The heat wave finally broke and we are now having seasonally appropriate weather for the time of year.
But THEN we had rain and our weather people were freaking out because there was a chance of flash flooding.Only in the mountains and deserts .With all the freaking out you would think it was a county wide thing by how the weather was being reported on.
*On the Vintage San Diego Facebook there was a “guess where this is?” post, a picture from 1971.One of the guesses was Seaport Village.Really? All the way back then?(and I just looked on their Wikipedia page; they broke ground in 1978 and it opened in 1980. Really? It’s always been there since I can remember.
A while back there were a bunch of posts with pictures of Horton Plaza(R.I.P.)whilst it was being built.

[Nerding out San Diego edition]
May. 29th, 2022 09:10 amY’all know I love anything having to do with history and also seeing pictures of San Diego back in the day. It’s amazing to see how much of San Diego was farmlands(and is now built up-Mission Valley for one! ) Or down my the border-Dairy Mart road is named because, well, there was a dairy there at one point.
(See also: Jamacha:Never knew(until recently) that it’s pronounced “ham a shaw”. *and* I’ve lived here most of my life!
Horton Plaza brought out all sorts of feelings in people(every post on the vintage San Diego group that I lurk on mentions getting lost in the parking lot.Which, YES! That was a thing. But the way Horton Plaza was built guaranteed that you would get lost at some point trying to find a particular place.
That’s not even talking about all of the changes they made. Like adding a Sam Goody(ridiculously overpriced) and there was even a Planet Hollywood there for a while(went there *once*. “Underwhelmed” is not even the word for it.) Can’t even remember when the last time I was there was..it was pretty empty, and back in its heyday it was *packed* with people(especially around Christmastime). Horton Plaza had some pretty high end stores so it makes sense that it’d be busy then.
Horton Plaza opened in 1985 and was *the* mall(even with its many quirks). Fashion Valley got a redo in 1997(it was kinda the ghetto mall..if they hadn’t redone it it might have gone the way of Horton Plaza but it didn’t and is easily one of the nicest malls in the area(tied with UTC..UTC got a redo and it is nothing like the UTC I remember from when I was a kid.Crazy thing?Pretty sure that none of the original stores from when the mall opened are there anymore(I remember stores and restaurants that are *long* gone!)

[Wouldn’t live anywhere else]
Apr. 25th, 2022 09:06 amAs I’ve said before I have lived in San Diego 99% of my life, and in the 70’s and 80’s, too.So I remember a lot of places that are long gone.
There was a place near my parents’ house that had something that was like a bloomin’ onion..or a large onion ring..You had me at large onion rings, lol.
Pt. Loma Seafoods has always been good,..when they remodeled and expanded it it didn’t change the quality of anything else!
Only went there once but it gave retro vibes, and that’s the Red Fox Room. It closed, but opened in another location.Thing of it was that it was attached to a hotel that was giving retro vibes. Rather apropos if you ask me!
I just looked to see if the moving walkway at the zoo is still there(it’s not.)That was thrilling for me as a kid.
Whilst we’re talking about Balboa Park.. my favourite field trip when I was a kid was the Fleet Space Centre. Informational and all hands on and occasionally they would change what was in there but there are things that have been there since I was a kid and I was a kid some years ago.

You know you’re from San Diego when..]
Feb. 8th, 2022 07:43 amBefore we went to IKEA the other day we went to my niece’s house. The off ramp was Fairmount which had me singing “Pearson Ford we stand alone at Fairmount and El Cajon”. (Pearson was a car dealership). If you’ve lived in San Diego for any amount of time(I have, more or less my entire life) and that name was so familiar to me!
Want to get me waxing nostalgic? It doesn’t take much. Like the OG Fashion Valley(before it got a whole ass redo and is easily one of the nicest malls in the area. It wasn’t always so.They have gone very high end but back in the day, it was a bit different(to give you some idea, at least 30 plus years ago they had a Woolworth there.Yeah!)
I am one of those people who it doesn’t take much to get me talking about San Diego. I miss Anthony’s by the harbor SO much. We used to go there a LOT.I always ordered the same thing(fish and chips). They just knocked down Pernicano’s in Hillcrest. What’s interesting about that place is that old man Pernicano, the patriarch of the family, was a homophobe. Irony, much?
There are places that have seen better days and were much busier at one point. Seaport Village for one(back in the day you would go there and there would be tons of people there and it was a whole thing.)There was a store there that sold mugs and they had some with funny sayings on them .“Beavers don’t give a dam” was one of them.
Also, Horton Plaza which was sprawling .And they knocked it down!It was a dead mall for several years before they finally demoed it. When it first opened there were a lot of empty stores but they filled in pretty quickly and some of them were there for a while and they left. Horton Plaza had it’s time and then it didn’t. Let’s not forget when they added the Sam Goody store(always overpriced..I don’t think I ever bought anything there.)
Did you know that Price Club, which merged with Costco, started in San Diego? They only had one store for the longest time. Also, Jack In The Box.Also Qualcomm(my dad is friends with Gary Jacobs who is the son of Qualcomm’s founder.)

[The place I call home]
Nov. 22nd, 2021 09:32 amI have lived in San Diego for the vast majority of my life and *points at subject line*.
There is a lot of history in this here city and we have several shows on our local PBS station about the history of San Diego and all of the places that you have wondered about..
Growing up, we always went to the usual places of historic significance(the Missions, Old Town, and some other unusual suspects(Sea World which isn’t even a specifically San Diego thing.I just went to Sea World for the first time in a LONG time and yeah..I remembered why I never was very impressed by it, to be honest.
And then you have the experiences that I put off for a LOT of years-like going on the Giant Dipper coaster in Mission Beach. A friend of mine bought me a ticket to go on there and I was THRILLED. I’ve always been a bit intimidated by the Giant Dipper but boy was it a thrill-in the best kind of way-and also the view-the view is amazing-probably one of the best in San Diego.

[Days gone by]
Oct. 5th, 2021 09:21 amI remember when Horton Plaza was being built /opened.not that many places were open at the time but more got added over time. My favourite spot was a bookstore on one of the lower levels of the mall.It was big and had a HUGE selection.
Since I was there,I remember the places that most have forgotten(I can still recall quite a few of the places that were in the sort of food court area-there was a HUGE turnover of places(see also:Johnny Rockets and Planet Hollywood. I only ever went to a Planet Hollywood once and I was not impressed *and* it was overpriced for what you got.
Highlights for me?The 2-story Levis store. I think that was one of the few places that made it to the very end.The last time that I was at Horton Plaza(many years ago)it was already starting to go into a decline .I remember the days when it was CROWDED and you couldn’t move for people. Now it doesn’t exist and they’re going to turn it into some sort of tech campus. That is some sort of turnaround.
Part of the problem(as it is in a lot of places) is the homeless population which started out in the park in front of Horton Plaza and then eventually into the mall itself. That is where it became a problem. It was bad then and(in a lot of places around here, too) Thing is, there were a lot of factors that led to the demise of Horton Plaza. Not just what I just mentioned. One of the failures(IMO) was putting a several-level Sam Goody store.Overpriced and they were trying to be a lot of different things .Like at one point they had a cafe where you could have coffee or whatever and listen to music on listening stations(and then, if you were so inclined, pay too much for that CD.Yes,I’m throwing shade. No,I don’t care.)

[A Local two-fer]
May. 15th, 2021 09:45 amI asked my brother about the place we went to-the marine antiques store. The place he went with my nephew was NOT it. As my brother remembers the store we went to was in Pacific Beach. My comment about the store owner not minding having kids in his store stands.
Secondly, I was watching an old 20/20 episode about Andrew Cunanan the guy who killed Gianni Versace . Yeah the action happened in Miami but Cunanan was from San Diego and it was a big deal here the whole time he was on then lam.
Seen also:The TV series The Assasination Of Gianni Versace which got it pretty right.

[Overrated is in the eye of the beholder]
Mar. 29th, 2021 08:31 amThese restaraunts are all overrated according to people in San Diego:
DZ Akin’s
Corvette Diner
Fillipi’s pizza
Saffron Thai(their food is GOOD.)
Tip Top Meats(comments about it being sub par..nah. I mean, they have a deal where you get a steak, all the trimmings, and a beer for an insanely cheap price.Hell yeah!)
El Indio(which I find hilarious since it’s right up there(IMO) as one of the best Mexican food places in San Diego.)
Point Loma Seafood(the problem with it, pre-remodel-and I went there a lot especially when we had family from out of town-and once they go there once they want to any chance they get.)
Fidel’s(Really?Their chicken burrito is 💯.)
I’ve got two overrated of my own: Carnitas Snack shack.Beloved of many on the San Diego Chowhound boards but some of their reviews on Yelp(for what it’s worth..).
Also, Milton’s Deli in Del Mar. Overpriced and the WORST service.

[Balboa Park]
Mar. 14th, 2021 09:58 amI randomly had a memory jogged(if you have to know it was jogged by something that I saw..) in any case I WAS going to talk about the Museum Of Man in Balboa Park. But then I decided to cover all of the park!
But we’ll start at Museum Of Man and work from there. One of my favourite things about the Museum Of Man was the lady who made fresh tortillas-with lots of butter-over in one corner.LOVED those-if we we went there for a field trip we’d always bring extra money -yeah, they were THAT good!
If you like views, park at the Hillcrest-adjacent side of the park and walk across the Cabrillo bridge-there’s a view out to downtown and the Coronado bridge. Also if you’re on the right hand side of the street, you go right by the dog park where there are always dogs running around (especially in the summer when my dad and I go to plays at the Old Globe..also on the route is the campanile(bell tower) which was open for tours for a while and which, when you got to the top had a view in every direction.I didn’t get the chance to do that-they have been retrofitting so it’s closed now-for good, unfortunately. The park dates back to the early 20th century so they’ve had to go through and retrofit.
Keep walking and you pass the Museum Of Art(which is amazing) and the Museum Of Modern Art(their sculpture garden is right next to the Old Globe.) Speaking of things I could do whole other posts on..The Old Globe is one.
Then there’s the Prado, which has really good food(and if you don’t want to wait for a table you can go to the bar. They have a limited menu but you should be able to find *something*)
Fleet Science Centre was a popular field trip when I was a kid-they have an IMAX theatre(for field trips it was always a combination of the science centre and IMAX which, being a nerdy child,I loved. They’ve redone it a LOT over the years (the better for future generations of school kids or even people who are just visiting from out of town. It’s someplace I would highly recommend.
Just briefly I’m going to mention a few things:
The carousel and the train ride(closer to the zoo than the Science Centre). I LOVED the carousel as a kid-it was pretty fast (so is the one at Seaport Village IIRC) and it was THRILLING to young me. So was the train ride.
Ashamed to admit I had never been to the Japanese friendship garden until quite recently. It’s a nice walk down a path and even on a hot day(like it was when we were there) it was plenty shady.
[It IS the same place!]
Mar. 4th, 2021 07:32 amAsked my brother about the marine antiques place I mentioned in another post.He confirmed that yes, it’s the same place. And looking at pictures I am even more amazed that the owners were OK with a bunch of kids hanging out in their store!
One part that I remember is that there was a ladder that you climbed up and there was a loft area. I was OK going up but I was freaked out going back down to earth. But when I look at pictures I don’t see that at all so I’m wondering if I’m remembering correctly or if it was some sort of Mandela effect thing thus the confusion as to whether it was the same place.
