I have HBO right now(and I’m not going to tell my dad this let him figure it out I am enjoying having HBO(and Showtime!) for now.
The reason that I mention this is because I saw that the second episode of The New Pope(the follow-up to The Young Pope) was on so I watched it. I was struck with the thought that you wouldn’t *have* to have some knowledge of Catholicism but it wouldn’t hurt, either.
(Note: I *am* Catholic.Raised Catholic went to Mass every Sunday ‘till I was old enough to do my own thing and refuse to go and my parents couldn’t do anything about it.I mean,I quit going to classes to be confirmed so I was never confirmed(yeah,I know!) it didn’t seem to be a problem when I became godmother to my oldest nephew- they didn’t even ask me for the certificate I got after I went to several days’ worth of classes.Boring(and stuff I vaguely remember having to learn when I went to CCD years and years ago)
For me, it’s interesting to see ritual in the church, as I said I grew up Catholic..and let me tell you that never leaves you.Even if you’re like me and have what can only be described as an ambivalent attitude towards the church . For many reasons. For me, it’s homosexuality. The Church has always been VERY anti-gay and I can’t, in good conscience, agree with the church on that point.
Abortion too. I have always been pro-choice(though it’s interesting to note that my Catholic birth mother gave me up for adoption because abortion was illegal at the time I was born. So there’s that.) In cases where the mother’s health is in danger, or the baby is not going to survive, then ABSOLUTELY abortion should be available.
Fortunately, Catholicism is not a self-reporting(or someone reporting ON you) religion and you can have such opinions without worrying about it.(and what I mean by the self reporting or having people reporting on you is the Mormons. There ARE Mormons who don’t agree with the Mormon Church’s stance on many things(but especially homosexuality) but they have to keep it on the down low because they want to be Mormons in “good standing” and be able to get their temple reccomends. Which is just being able to go in a Mormon temple as opposed to your local stake.)
(Note(again:) I know a LOT about various religions.Quite a bit about Mormonism as a friend of mine as a kid was Mormon and Judaism(what I know about Judaism and Jews has mostly been filtered through exposure to TV and movies. Not the best filter but there you go.And I mentioned a while back that I had a teacher in grade school that taught us about Hanukkah, complete with latkes and dreidel!)
