I had a distinct lack of friends in middle school and Duran Duran felt like my friends..in a weird sort of way.
In the past I have talked about being on the autism spectrum and back then I had no idea what that was,
For me, Duran Duran was a normal part of my teenage years-think Elvis, or the Beatles. To my parents’ credit my parents never saw it as a phase and were very good about it the whole time that I was a fan if it WAS a phase it was one that lasted several years! It was not unheard of Duran Duran fans to be crazy-we made Beatles fans back in the day look like amateurs! Fans to the exclusion of everything else. I was all in.There was more than one meeting with teachers from my school. Was I over the top?Oh yeah. But for me it was a coping mechanism. When you’re 12-15 years old.. those are some of the worst years of your life. I got into Duran Duran and as I said,I was pretty invested there for a few years.
I was awkward and on the spectrum. From the prism of knowing what it was years later..I release that it was a obsession-something that is not unheard of for people on the autism spectrum.
I was a fan of Duran Duran to the point of wanting to buy everything that I could when it came to merch…I heard a Duran Duran fan describe some of the competitions that Duran Duran fans had over their collection as “dick swinging contests”. Ironic given that the vast majority of Duran Duran fans back in the day were female.)
(This is going to be an occasional series..I had to buy a notebook to make tons of notes. Things like this I can’t do just off the top of my head.)
