One of my online friends was talking about the Duran Duran/Spandau Ballet rivalry back in the day.I was aware of it, but didn’t get as much play in the States.
Here, with the teenybopper mags it was other bands-like Menudo. I never understood that.I didn’t personally know anyone who liked Menudo but they were put out there as being major competition for Duran Duran back in the day.Which is weird-back in the day Duran Duran were Beatles-level huge.Obvious comparison but imma make it anyways. There was just as much Duran Duran merch as there was Beatles in their heyday.
I remember a store that had a whole section of Duran Duran stuff-pins, bookbags, pencil cases, you name it.I don’t think I ever bought anything there though. My go to place was International Gifts at UTC-that place is long gone but they had a pretty good selection of music memorabilia(that was where I bought the 1984 tour book for Duran Duran.Wasn’t able to get it at the time I went to the concert.Actually had to save my allowance for quite a while before I was able to buy it(I missed out on buying a lot of magazines because I got a pittance of an allowance. I think I’ve talked about that before.)
Couldn’t have been too bad because they were on a TV game show and it was competitive..point of fact:They were actually quite good friends in real life.
