roaming_kate23Read an e book by a gal who is about my age(went to one of the show in 1984 at the Forum in L.A.) about being a Duran Duran fan back in the day and hating critics who,well, didn’t like Duran Duran(there were plenty of those-I remember a very snarky review in the San Diego Tribune after the show that I went to).
I can relate to all of it:
Bringing my Walkman to school for Duran Duran related reasons(amazed that my teachers never figured it out and they pretty much were not fans of the band save 2 teachers.)
Listening to the local “Official Duran Duran station”(for me it was KROQ in L.A.) supposedly there was another “official” Duran Duran station in L.A. but KROQ was *the* first radio station to play Duran Duran back in the day(this was even before MTV..we’ll touch on MTV in a moment)
Having bedroom walls covered with posters of the band(with me it was closet doors and one and a half of them were covered with posters.I tore them all off one day in a fit of pique when I decided that I wasn’t a fan anymore( I wasn’t lucky enough to have a ton of friends who were also fans of the band.)
Both of our first concerts were Duran Duran(IIRC the San Francisco and San Diego concerts were tacked on at the end of a very long tour and I didn’t find out about it until the last minute. My tickets weren’t quite in the last row, but they were pretty close.) After I went to the Duran Duran concert I wore my ticket around my neck(punched a hole in it)
As for MTV..yes,I would spend a lot of time watching MTV waiting for Duran Duran’s videos-any of them-to come on.Since during the first few years they only had a handful of videos so it was very likely. I liked Duran Duran SO much that I complained about having to miss the 1984 MTV music video awards because I had to go to my aunt’s wedding.Yeah.Back then,I had no shame.None.
