[What I’m reading]

The Fireman by Joe Hill. It’s a sort of post-apocalyptic book(though you have the feeling that maybe society is building itself up again at the end of the book).
Here we have an example(along with The Passage and The Age Of Miracles)of how to write an end of the world book without resorting to the usual tropes everyone else uses. Is the plague(such as it is) in The Fireman plausible? Not really but it’s taking something that’s been done(and done a lot of times)and puts a new spin on it.
I’d like to see an apocalyptic movie/book that starts right in the middle of the plague/asteroid/what have you event. But narratively,I can see why providing a backstory a little in advance of the event, works the best. The best example of this is The Passage, which kinda meanders and does a bit of world building(before the world effectively ends.
(But to be fair there is some conjecture about how much of the world was affected by the virus..it definitely spread outside of the United States..There are notes from a conference on the virus held in the Indo Australian Republic.I’d have to go back and read the books again for clarification.
