[Relatable in so many different ways.]
Jan. 19th, 2025 07:21 amI am reading a book (Witchcraft For Wayward Girls by Grady Hendrix)that takes place in the 1970’s..about girls who are at a home for unwed mothers. It is also the South, so there is a religious tinge to it(more than a little bit!).The way these girls were treated was TERRIBLE.No spoilers for the book but this is something that actually happened. The girls were sent to these homes, and gave their babies up for adoption After, they went back home. With everything that came with that(it is mentioned more than once that once it was discovered they were pregnant they became outcasts in their community and it didn’t change much when they went back home.A frequent story that was given was that the girls who got pregnant were going out of town to take care of family(though I doubt many people believed it.)
There is a lot to be said about women’s rights, and autonomy. Religion plays a HUGE role in the book
This is very close to my heart as I was adopted as a baby.My birth mother gave me up for adoption.-already had several kids. Mind you, this was pre-Roe V. Wade(R.I.P.) and there was no way that my Catholic birth mother was going to abort me. So she made the choice to give me up for adoption(which I am so gad that she did.I could have not wished for a better adoptive family than what I got.)
