[Several parts to this post]
Sep. 27th, 2024 08:03 amReading a post on Kveller where the writer was talking about her son going to Hebrew school. He has resigned himself that he IS going to Hebrew school. It is good as a social thing, and also to connect to his religion.
I feel that. Before you have your First Holy Communion, Catholics spend several years learning the Catechism(even though it’s something you’re never going to need to know and if you become a godparent(which I am) you have to go through classes and you rehash all of the stuff you learned way back when.
The Mormons.. if you are Mormon and reading this..I am not going to be positive here. To be fair this is not the mainstream Mormon church. They were your average Mormons and then..something happened to them.
Best example of this is Chad and Lori Daybell. And Ruby Franke(granted she didn’t kill her kids but she abused them. )And this is NOT a new thing .
Think The Lafferty Brothers, who went FULL Fundamentalist Mormon. The wife of one of the brothers was from(what passes for a)liberal Mormon family. They were devout, but her father encouraged her to go to college .The Laffertys expected her to stay home and have lots of kids.
But she did NOT want to do that and the Laffertys saw this and..it led to her being killed by what is called Blood atonement. This hasn’t been a thing in the mainstream Mormon church for a long time..however Fundamentalist LDS especially ones on the extreme side(and the Laffertys and others definitely fall under that category.)
There is quite a lot to the Mormon religion. It is definitely what is considered a “high demand”religion.Yes, even within the mainstream Mormon Church. There are a lot of hoops that one has to jump in order to stay in good standing with the church.Don’t even get me started on the honour code at BYU that is just asking for people to snitch on each other(and it does happen..a lot more than you would think it does.)
All that being said..the Mormon missionaries that I have met are VERY nice, offering to come over to my house.I won’t say that I wasn’t tempted.
