[People worth knowing]
Sunday, 6 March 2022 08:26The inaugural post of a new tag..and I knew exactly who I wanted to talk about.
Dr. Amy Tuteur who is a OB/GYN. She does not suffer fools gladly(that’s putting it mildly!) and has opinions about things related to childbirth and women’s health.
She has a lot of haters(natural childbirth types hate her because she advocates for doing what you need to do when you’re giving birth(epidurals,C-sections specifically).C sections save lives.Do they do too many of them NOT for life saving reasons?Sure. But there are legit reasons to have one(my nephew would not be here if it wasn’t for c-sections…he was trying to kung fu kick his way out the womb.)
As for epidurals..let’s just say that if I was pushing something the size of a watermelon out of a hole the size of a lemon(I don’t know who said that originally but it’s true. Women should have the decision to have pain medication if they need it.)
The natural childbirth/crunchy types are all over her because they think they have the right to not vaccinate their kids/have certain shots(if I had had kids I would have made sure that they did get their vaccinations but they would get them spread out so not getting all of them at once to overwhelm them.)
(At this point I have to add the caveat that I don’t have children .I have 3 nephews and 2 nieces who I love to death!) but as a woman and a feminist, issues related to women, and things related to women’s health in particular are important to me. So Dr. Amy ,IMO is a freaking rockstar. And we haven’t even talked about lactation consultants yet!
That could be a whole post in and of itself..I know, not all lactation consultants..howEVER I have heard multiple stories about women who have had mastectomies go on to have children get harassed by lactation consultants to breastfeed.Ummm HOW??? And it’s not as simple as the lactation consultants make it seem. Apparently breast milk fixes all manner of ills and is SO MUCH better for babies than formula. Guess what? I was formula fed(I was adopted though so not much choice there.) .I came out fine.I had issues with spitting up for a while(I was scrawny AF when my parents adopted me but that didn’t last very long. Of course,I’m the kid who wasn’t picky in the least. Culinarily, imma like “bring it on!)
