Yes the murder of George Floyd happened some time ago but I wasn’t sure how I should approach this subject when so much has been said, so much of it much more eloquently than I ever could(and I am plenty eloquent but this....It’s got a lot of people feeling a lot of ways and there are some aspects of it I would like to talk about
Cancel culture(or not..)
There have been cancel movements for Live PD, Paw Patrol and even a Beatles song(Penny Lane)because the Mr. Penny who the street is named after was a slave owner.
The first(Live PD) I get, but Paw Patrol a lot less.It’s a kid’s show, for fuck’s sake.How is that pro-cops?That,IMO is reaching.
Gone With The Wind was taken off of HBO That I agree with.They’re going to put it back on after they have added some contexts to when it was made, and the subject matter itself.
Speaking of movies,Bryce Dallas Howard, who played a racist in The Help thinks there are much better movies than the Help(I’ve read the book twice and I remember being *outraged* the first time I read it, and no so much the second.Because racism has become such a normal part of life..ever since George Floyd’s death there have been people of colour being severely injured and killed.EVERY DAY MORE OR LESS. This is..saying it’s wrong would be the understatement of,well, forever.)
Finally, to my last point:White people’s attitudes(because let’s not sugar coat this-they are a problem-not all, just certain(large-ish) groups..that’s what makes it so scary because they’re so unhinged and think that their opinion is the only one that matters and that African Americans are not human beings.Holy fucking Jim Crow. I was surprised at the non-reaction from NASCAR fans(maybe I wasn’t looking in the right places)n about Confederate flags being banned from NASCAR races.Maybe I’m a bit naive on that one.
What makes me happy is that there are so many statues-not just the confederate statues but of slave owners in the UK and elsewhere.
There’s a movement to get BYU renamed because Brigham Young was a racist..black people were not allowed to be members of the Mormon church since 1978. And let me tell you that there was a shit storm when that happened.And they’re not sorry and they never have been for that fact.An ex friend of mine who is a devout Mormon (long story on why he is an ex friend..both him and his brother..)adopted two mixed race kids(black and white)I’m sure he’d say “How could I be racist? I have two mixed race children!” And that? Right there?Is one of the HUGE problems with our society. The “I have...” defense. Weak sauce.
