[Catholic perspective]
Sunday, 16 February 2020 16:03Interesting to me how The New Pope has been art imitating life. They had a pope go into a coma, had one pope for about 2 seconds then he was killed then Pope John Paul the III.
If you know anything about the history of the Catholic Church(and if you don’t I’ll fill you any anyways) you know that recently(late 70’s)they had several popes die in short order and then we had Pope John Paul II who was Pope for years. Then Benedict who was Pope but retired ,and, since 2013,Pope Francis(who has been my favourite Pope, tied with JPII.Never could like Benedict-he was a cold fish and didn’t like going out and being among the people the way that John Paul did, and Pope Francis(who gives his security detail shpilkes ever time he’s out and about. He’s so likeable that even people who aren’t Catholic like Francis(and having been to Rome twice I can tell you that you see people from all walks of life at the Vatican and at the Sistine Chapel.)
The Popes(Pius and then John Paul the III are kinda out of touch with their flock..to a point.John Paul III comes off as a bit prickly at first(for that matter so does Pius) but when he needs to be he is. He’s quite aware of how much people loved Pius and a sort of cult of Pius has happened whilst he is in a coma. But there is a lot to like about John Paul II even if he’s not down with the idea of gay marriage for Catholics amongst other things.
Quite frankly I’m surprised the usual suspects(The Catholic League among them) have not made more of a big deal .They have, but not to the extent that I would have thought. And there is PLENTY in there for them to get upset about. The Catholic League *did* say that “Liberals” would love it.Yes, and people who don’t follow every rule of the Church(there are more of us-and yes I consider myself a person who believes, believes in God, does the giving up stuff for Lent and not eating meat on Fridays during Lent ..but when it comes to the Church’s stances on abortion ,and homosexuality(and gay marriage)..yeah..no.
