[Once a Duranie..]
Jan. 25th, 2020 09:04 pmThere was a documentary on Duran Duran on Showtime the other day.Oh man.. there were a lot of pictures I had never seen before, of the band in their early days. They talked about the first few albums and then in the gap between their second and third albums they got hugely popular. They really were the Beatles of the 1980’s(mind you, there were other bands-like Menudo- who tried to be as popular but were more of a niche thing than Duran Duran..I mean I didn’t know anyone who liked them back in the day)
Also fun?Footage of the band that I’ve never seen before(though they used a lot of footage from the 3(!) tour movies that were made on the 1984 tour.
The first was Sing Blue Silver, the second was As The Lights Go Down(which premiered on Cinemax) and the third was Arena:An Absurd Notion which was really arty farty but it does have its fans in the Duran Duran fandom(personally, I would say that I like Sing Blue Silver the best out of the 3..it’s very quotable).I found out years and years later that the day after I went to my first concert(Duran Duran at the San Diego Sports Arena )there was a movie shoot/free concert! If I had known about that I would have been there for sure. Apparently this is something they did multiple times-at least 2 that I’m aware of though there may have been more and the one that they had in Oakland was all day so I’m guessing that they got a day’s worth of footage out of that movie shoot(it went from noon-ish to 6 in the evening IIRC reading). So they may have done the same thing in San Diego ,which would have been a LOT of Duran Duran, in addition to the show the day before.
(Just looked it up-they had at *least* 3 days of filming and they were doing filming for Arena and As The Lights Go Down, primarily)
The notes say that one of the bands was poorly received by the hysterical and rowdy crowd. Yeah, well..not sure who was hiring the opening bands for that particular tour but they were ill suited to be opening for Duran Duran(as a matter of fact I had remembered some local band opening tor Duran Duran(I would look for their name in listings in the Reader) but the timeline I was looking neat says it was another band.Hmmm. I would check my ticket stub but it’s long lost..Funny story about my ticket stub:I punched a hole in it and wore it around my neck(the stink eye I got for doing that! Especially from my teachers but also from classmates. I remember being told to take off all of my pins(I was wearing a bunch of them on my shirt which was a Duran Duran shirt(of course). Then there was the jean jacket(that was a Duranie thing-don’t ask me why-with tons of Duran Duran pins and patches on it.
First concerts are a big deal, and Duran Duran being *my* first concert was a huge deal. Again,IIRC the show in San Diego was tacked on at the end of an already long tour(the tour went for 5 plus months which is a long time to be away from family and friends.)
